Golden Eagles are big birds. Big birds need big meals like this fallen mule deer. The circumstances surrounding the deer’s death are a mystery, perhaps a cougar or coyotes, maybe even the eagles themselves. We discovered the carcass when the ravens started a ruckus, noisily squawking and talking ill of our approach. The eagles suddenly took flight from the kill, flying low and slow into the distance.
This was a good time for a trail camera. Animals (or people) trip the camera’s IR motion sensor and the camera silently takes a photo, day or night. The trail cam placed discretely, we beat feet and left the area to return to normal. Several hours later, a return trip reveals that this immature golden eagle enjoyed a hearty lunch buffet.
