Fruit trees in the Wenatchee Valley are in full bloom this weekend, making the drive on Highway 2 from Leavenworth to Wenatchee especially beautiful this time of year.  As you pass valley orchards, most of the trees you see will be pears.  Wenatchee may still be called the Apple Capital of the World, but most orchardists made the change from apples to pears in the past 20 years due to declining prices and oversupply in the market.

As a general rule of thumb, trees with white blossoms are pears and apples have light pink blooms.  Popular pear varieties grown in the area include bartlett, d’anjou, red anjou, and bosc.  For a closer view, take a detour off highway 2 and check out backroads such as North Road, Stine Hill, Brender Canyon, or North Dryden Road.
