Cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, and more have all sprouted up at the new Community Garden in Leavenworth, filling a formerly vacant corner lot with greenery and food for those without a garden space of their own.  Located at the Barn Beach Reserve at 12th and Commercial, the E Lorene Young Community Garden is providing a place for growing food and growing community.

The garden was formed by a committee of volunteers, who began the planning process in 2011 and broke ground this spring, with the help of generous donations by local businesses and individuals.   Individuals may also help fund the garden by purchasing a personalized brick for the garden through the Buy-a-Brick Campaign.

Created as a gathering place, the space has been transformed into a garden that will not only provide food, much of it for those in need with half of the beds dedicated to low income households, but also educate members of the community about how to grow their own gardens while preserving green space and beautifying the local neighborhood.

The volunteers at The E. Lorene Young Community Garden plan to fill the calendar with community events  throughout the year.  Upcoming activities include a general membership meeting and celebration potluck, scheduled for Thursday, July 26th from 6 to 8 pm at the garden. It will also include the election of new board members.
